Books I’m reading… or trying to.
My attention span is already so fractured by the internet, and there are so many things I am interested in and want to learn. Many of them are more compelling than the things I really HAVE to do. The only way for me to work at the quality level I expect from myself is for me to WANT to do it. So like a butterfly I flit about for nectar.
I love books, I like holding them, touching them, smelling them, even writing in them sometimes. I was a reluctant reader growing up, I preferred comic books because they were more fun and weren’t taken as seriously as literature. Mostly though I read non fiction because I’m “looking for information” I can use.
For awhile I worked in a B Dalton bookstore where I would pretend to know something about books. I really knew nothing. The old saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover” is surely true, but I would add that you CAN sell a book by it’s cover.
Based on this cover I wouldn’t have bought this one, but it came recommended and has information in it that I really need.
Distracting me from digging into that is my curiosity over Salman Khan’s vision for education and trying to understand exactly where I agree or might disagree.
Finally this book about Virtual Reality appeared and confirms some of the things I’ve been saying for a few years. This guy knows way more than me but I have lots of good ideas of my own too. The VR train is moving slowly but it is moving and will make a huge impact on human culture.
Then if I really want to travel in time and space I jump into this book which was recommended by a stellar Fulbright teacher who just returned from Botswana. Books are the best!
